Late Nights, Big Dreams, and a Whole Lot of Love: The Truth About Building a Business with My Husband

Late Nights, Big Dreams, and a Whole Lot of Love: The Truth About Building a Business with My Husband

Kerri Cannon

There’s a certain magic in building something from the ground up with the person you love. But let me tell you - running a business with your spouse is not for the faint of heart. It’s thrilling, exhausting, rewarding, and, at times, downright overwhelming. Our workshop isn't just where we create custom pieces; it’s where we navigate the ever-blurred lines between work and home, partnership and entrepreneurship, family time and business hustle.

The Challenges: When Work and Life Become One

One of the biggest hurdles we’ve faced is separating our roles as business partners and husband and wife. When your business is quite literally in your home, there’s no true “clocking out.” Conversations about order deadlines, materials, and finances bleed into dinner prep, bedtime routines, and weekends.

And let’s talk about the challenge of staying connected as a couple. The early days were filled with late nights spent designing, sanding, and completing orders - often with our toddlers asleep upstairs. It’s easy to let the business consume every ounce of energy we have, leaving little left for each other. Finding time for date nights or even just a quiet moment together is something we’ve had to work hard to prioritize.

Then there’s the financial side. Entrepreneurship is unpredictable, and the highs and lows can be gut-wrenching. There have been months where the orders slowed, but the bills didn’t. And in those moments of uncertainty, we had to trust each other, lean into our shared vision, and keep pushing forward.

The Successes: Every Win Feels Monumental

But oh, the wins - when they come, they are so sweet. The thrill of our first four-figure order. And then the next one. The moment we realized people recognized our work before they even saw our name. The joy of seeing our handcrafted pieces in people’s homes, knowing we played a part in their most cherished moments.

There’s also something deeply fulfilling about making decisions together that feel right. The moments when we’ve taken risks, pivoted, and come out on the other side even stronger. The small victories, like surviving the months of uncertainty, the long nights, the ever-growing to-do lists - and realizing that, through it all, we’re still here. We’re still standing. We’re still building something that is all ours.

The Truths: The Beauty and Brutality of It All

Some days, I want to kiss him. Other days, I wonder if we made the right decision to go into business together. The truth is, running a business with your spouse isn’t just about logistics and orders - it’s about learning who we are, together and as individuals, in a whole new way.

But here’s another truth: this business saved me. It reignited a passion I hadn’t felt since I was a teenager, lost in my high school art classes. It gave me purpose beyond motherhood and redefined how I see myself. It got me through some of my darkest, loneliest days.

It set my soul on fire.

To be creative.

To make a difference.

To take an idea and quite literally run with it.

But let me be real - being an entrepreneur while raising two tiny humans is, without question, the hardest thing I’ve ever done. But it’s also the most rewarding. Owning a business is different. It hits deeper. It makes every struggle, every long night, every tear worth it. Because at the end of the day, it’s ours. And that means we get to define what success looks like for us.

The Secrets to Making It Work

So how do we make it work? Truthfully, we’re still figuring that out. But here’s what we’ve learned so far:

  • Define clear roles. One person needs to lead in each area to avoid stepping on each other’s toes.

  • Create separate workspaces. This has been a game-changer for keeping our work and personal lives balanced.

  • Overcommunicate. Seriously. Assume nothing. Talk about everything.

  • Set boundaries. Work can’t be the only thing we talk about. We prioritize family time, unplug, and take intentional breaks.

  • Say no. Not every opportunity aligns with our vision, and that’s okay.

  • Stay true to who we are. We started this business to create a life we love - not one that drains us.

  • Be okay with pivoting. Trying something new and realizing it’s not the right fit isn’t failure; it’s learning.

Running a business with my husband is the wildest, most incredible ride we’ve ever been on. Some days, it’s chaotic. Some days, it’s exhausting. But every single day, it’s worth it. Because we’re not just building a business - we’re building a life and a future. Together.
