Summer in Massachusetts: 10 Coastal Favorites from Our Family to Yours

Kerri Cannon

Summer in Massachusetts is nothing short of magic. There’s something about the salty breeze off the ocean, toes in the sand, and those slow, golden hours that seem to stretch just long enough to remind us what matters most. As a coastal family deeply rooted here, we cherish every bit of this season - and we make it a point to soak up every moment we can.

From hidden gems to classic traditions, here are 10 of our favorite things to do, see, and taste during a Massachusetts summer. Some are nostalgic, some are new - but all are part of what makes this season so special for our family.

1. Catching Sunset at Duxbury Beach

There’s something healing about watching the sun dip behind the Powder Point Bridge. Duxbury Beach is our go-to for an evening picnic, sandy toes, and just a little peace. Grab a pizza and our beach chairs and it's the perfect end to a summer day.

2. Cruising the Harbor in the "VacaSean"

One of our favorite family traditions? Boating days aboard the VacaSean. Whether we’re anchored off Peddocks Island, pulling up lobster traps, trolling for stripers, or just drifting with the tide, it’s where some of our best ideas (and snack spreads) happen.

3. Fresh Fish & Fried Clams at Jake’s Seafood in Hull

A true South Shore staple - and even more special because it’s owned by Sean’s cousins. Jake’s serves up fresh, classic New England seafood with a view of the bay that can’t be beat. We’re partial to the 'Pastariffic Swordfish' and fried clams (only the strips though!), but honestly, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Callie and Crew will tell you the French fries and fresh-from-the-oven rolls and butter are the best things there. It’s our go-to after beach days, boat rides, and anytime we’re craving something coastal and delicious.

4. Nana’s Beach in Hull

Private, quiet, and filled with childhood memories. This hidden stretch of rocky shore behind Sean’s mom’s house on Sunset Point is where our kids throw rocks, chase waves, and just be kids.

5. Sweet Treats at Sunshine Sundaes in Kingston

This bright little spot is a total summer win for our family. Sunshine Sundaes serves up all the classics plus the infamous Dole Whip - the same tropical treat we thought you could only find at Disney World. It’s a must-stop after the beach, and the perfect way to sweeten up a summer night (or bribe the kids into the car - no shame here).

6. A Day Trip (or Weekend Getaway) to Cape Cod

The Cape is our happy place - and we’ve mapped out all the must-stop spots, especially for our fellow gluten-free friends. We hit Mac’s Seafood in Chatham for the best GF fried clam strips, clam chowder, and fish tacos you’ll ever taste. 3 Fools in Orleans is our pizza and meatball sub haven. For a sweet treat, we head to Hot Chocolate Sparrow for a raspberry sorbet lime rickey that takes you right back to childhood summers. And of course, we never miss our friends at Sweet Izzy in Harwich, an all GF/DF dream come true.

No trip is complete without a visit with my aunt and uncle in Brewster - and if we time it just right, we end the day with a sunset at Paine’s Creek Beach. It’s hands-down our favorite beach for exploring with the kiddos, and the kind of spot that leaves your heart full long after your toes are dry.

7. Farmers Markets (and Friends)

You’ll find us one Saturday a month at the Pembroke Farmers Market - not just selling, but soaking in the local love. From fresh flowers to neighbor-made honey and ice cream, it’s a highlight of our summer rhythm. And yes, we’ll have our latest hats and gifts for sale, too!

8. Exploring Hornstra Farm in Norwell

A local treasure that’s part old-fashioned charm, part family fun. We love stopping by Hornstra Farm for a scoop (or two) of their homemade ice cream - made right on site! The baby cows are always a hit with the kids, and the farmstand is stocked with some of the best locally grown corn you’ll find all summer long. It’s a sweet, simple outing that never gets old.

9. Scenic Stroll to Scituate Lighthouse

Scituate has a way of wrapping you in that classic coastal feel. We love starting with a Harborwalk stroll, grabbing an iced coffee from Lucky Finn’s, and stopping by Nona’s for one of the creamiest cones around. From there, it’s a beautiful walk along the water to Scituate Lighthouse - one of our favorite spots to slow down, breathe in the sea air, and soak up that small-town charm.

10. Summer Nights Around the Firepit

Backyard fires with s’mores, sparklers, and tired toddlers wrapped in beach towels - these are the slow, golden moments we live for. No rush, no schedule. Just us, home, and each other.

Whether you're a lifelong local or just passing through, we hope this list inspires you to slow down, savor the season, and explore the salty corners of our beautiful state.

Cheers to summer by the sea!
